IEEE History Activities

When IEEE was formed in 1963, it established the IEEE History Committee as a committee of the Board of Directors with responsibility for promoting the collection, writing, and dissemination of historical information concerning both the IEEE and its predecessor organizations and the fields covered by IEEE technical and professional activities. It also responds to requests for assistance from museums and other public institutions with an interest in preserving and promoting the history of technology, and from major organizational units of IEEE interested in preserving and promoting their own histories. When appropriate, the IEEE History Committee provides information and recommendations to the IEEE Board of Directors.

In 1980, the IEEE History Center was formed as the staff arm of the IEEE History Committee. Since then, volunteers and staff have worked together to conduct several major public history programs.
